Toxikos commenced trading in 2001 and is based in Melbourne. It provides toxicological and health risk-related services to industrial and government clients in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
It has four major spheres of activity:
- Human health and ecological risk-assessments for chemicals found in food, air, water or soil in a variety of settings. These include industrial emissions (air and water), agriculture, food production, consumer products, contaminants, and occupational situations. The risk assessments are frequently used for environmental impact assessments for new or expanding industrial facilities, and for informing parties in litigation. For example after accidental spills or alleged chemical injury at work.
- Chemical registration: Toxikos supports the product introduction strategies of multinational clients by assisting them with the introduction and registration of new chemicals through Australian and New Zealand regulatory schemes such as NICNAS, APVMA, TGA, AQIS and ERMA. This may include design, commissioning and managing toxicological testing.
- Litigation support: Provision of information to legal teams involved with toxic torts, chemical spills, accidental chemical exposures, product recall, chemical misuse, and compensation for occupational chemical injuries. Focus is on cause-effect relationships, the extent of exposure, and potential alternative causes.
- General toxicological services: Compilation, interpretation and delivery of toxicological and health information on chemicals to managers and workers. Chemical watching briefs. An update and interpretation service for emerging toxicological and health data of chemicals as well as expert classification of hazardous substances. Potential health implications of minor or unwanted chemicals in consumer products, food or liquids. Toxicological profiles and assessment of introduction, or replacement, of a chemical ingredient in products. Commissioning and managing toxicological testing.
- Toxikos has experience in the integration of science, advocacy, and management skills to help clients address legal, regulatory, market opinion or technical confrontation.
- Toxikos has assisted government in establishing health based chemical guidelines and standards for safe public, occupational, and environmental health. This includes assessing public health risks and clean up requirements for contaminated soil, groundwater and surface water as well as health risk assessments of air emissions and evaluating indoor air quality data sets, including odour.
- The principal consultants have backgrounds in academia, government and industry, have been members of many government committees constituted for evaluation of health impacts of chemicals. They have participated in development of chemical regulations and evaluative processes in Australia and New Zealand. The only consultant toxicologist in Australia registered with the American Board of Toxicology is a founder of the company.
