emissionsXpert - a mandatory reporting tool kit

The emissionsXpert is a powerful yet cost-effective system that enables facilities to accurately record emissions data and compile compliance reports quickly and efficiently.

It will provide operators with a detailed understanding of their emissions, and is therefore an invaluable tool for pro-actively managing pollutants (including greenhouse gases) and for complying with mandatory reporting requirements.

Knowing what and how much your site is emitting is critical, especially with the current focus on climate change and emissions reporting. With recording and reporting requirements continually changing in line with political imperatives and scientific developments, it's essential that your emissions data management system remains up to date.

Estimating emissions of pollutants (including greenhouse gases) requires:

  • identifying emission sources
  • defining the pollutants to estimate
  • choosing a correct estimation or measurement technique
  • collecting and using activity data to estimate the emissions (e.g. distance travelled in a car, amount of coal combusted in a boiler, readings from a monitoring system etc)
  • configuring and viewing an emissions report

The emissionsXpert takes the user through this workflow to easily and reliably estimate emissions from a wide range of activities and sources.

At PEL Technologies we ensure the application is updated to account for any changes. This allows you to focus on your operations and not have to invest further in technology changes and staff resources in order to continually modify.

Five emission source types (e.g. area, point etc) are supported, and any gaseous or particle pollutant can be compiled.

What you know you can control

Key benefits

  • National, regional and internal reporting can be automated, which allow sites to enter emissions data once and the emissionsXpert will prepare submissions to the relevant reporting bodies. The emissions data can be entered automatically or manually.
  • Regulatory changes are reflected in the emissionsXpert immediately – via database updates – by PEL emission estimation specialists who understand the intricacies of each and every change
  • Ease of use and intuitiveness, which allows a report to be generated without technical knowledge and experience

Why invest in an Emissions Database or Register?

Working with large companies and governments with multiple sites, facilities and departments, we have found that it is common for the various entities within an organisation to have different data management processes and systems.

Often, these systems are not integrated into a cohesive unit and as such, data integrity is not as sound as it should be (data 'graveyards' as opposed to data 'systems'). Because of the different data systems, organisations are forced to spend considerable time and resources integrating data and compiling reports in specific formats (e.g. for the NPI or Greenhouse Challenge program).

This ad-hoc approach is resource-intensive and expensive, requiring staff to keep systems updated and in place, and external consultants to assist on a repeat basis.

The emissionsXpert can solve these problems. It was designed to save time and money, and to ensure reports can be completed accurately and cost-effectively.

Solution Overview

A major feature of the emissionsXpert is its ease of use and intuitiveness. This enables an emissions report to be compiled and generated without the need for advanced estimation knowledge and experience.

Other features include:

  • Alerts to warn of erroneous data;
  • Emails sent to prompt people for data;
  • Managers notified as soon as reports are complete;
  • Locked down equations, eliminating errors with the calculations (unlike Excel spreadsheets that are prone to errors);
  • Online help;
  • Web access; no software is required to be installed onsite, and access is not limited to a single workstation, but available to any computer with Internet access;
  • Multi-User access, allowing access from multiple sites;
  • Hierarchical permissions, allowing different permissions to individual logons (such as read-only, administrator, reviewer etc.);
  • Notes – enabling users to annotate data used to estimate NPI emissions (i.e. to record origin of data or assumptions made);
  • Full audit capabilities - details of the user and time/date data are entered, changes can be recorded and accessed by users with permission;
  • Data Validation - innovative reports can be created to validate the estimated emissions. These reports range from basic data comparison between reporting periods to graphical representation of trends for each pollutant. As data are entered, their validity can be assessed by the NPI system, and rejected or flagged if suspect. This is especially important for systems that are partly or fully auto-populating where the incoming data may not have undergone any previous quality checks.
